O Father of lights, from whom flow all good gifts,\nI thank you for this simple cup.\n\nThough unassuming, it is surprising.\nThough uncomplicated, complex.\nThough ubiquitous, significant.\n\nIn this moment I am experiencing something that is global in nature but extremely local.\nI sit in a small caf\u00e9 on the Iberian Peninsula, \nI hear the hum of conversation but understand little.\nI smell espresso mingled with unknown aromas.\nI sit on a simple chair but in an exotic place.\nI am surrounded by the familiar but feel foreign.\n\nAnd this drink that I sip speaks to the giftedness and cooperation of mankind.\nTrees cultivated in gardens in far off places\nProduce beans that are harvested,\nAnd dried,\nAnd sifted,\nAnd packaged,\nAnd shipped,\nAnd roasted,\nAnd ground,\nAnd brewed,\nAnd handed to me in a ceramic cup.\n\nThe making of this beverage has been through a succession of hands.\nFrom the farmer,\nTo the laborer,\nTo the shipping engineer,\nTo the inspection agent,\nTo the delivery specialist,\nTo the barrista,\nAnd finally to me.\n\nIn exchange for this incredible collaboration \nI pay a few coins. \nA trifle for this logistical miracle.\n\nO good Father, I thank you for this steaming cup.\nYou made us to cultivate the earth and garden this globe\nAnd this is only one small fruit of that labor.\nIn your image we exercise dominion over the ground,\nThat, because of our sin, \nFights back with thorns and thistles.\nBut because of your grace, \nGives way more often than not, \nTo our plows and pruning sheers.\n\nO Father, thank you for this small cup.\nThank you for your image bearers around the world and in this room.\nThank you for your unfathomed creation.\nThank you.\u2060\n-------------\nJames 1:16-18<\/pre>\n\n\n
