\u201cGeorge Buttrick\u2026 was [from 1927 to 1954] pastor of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York. One week he had been off on a speaking engagement and was flying back to New York City. On the plane he had a pad and a pencil and he was making some notes for next Sunday\u2019s sermon. The man seated next to him was eyeing him with curiosity. Finally, the curiosity got the best of him, and so he said to Buttrick, \u2018I hate to disturb you\u2014you\u2019re obviously working hard on something\u2014but what in the world are you working on?\u2019 \u201c\u2018Oh, I\u2019m a Presbyterian minister,\u2019 said Buttrick. \u2018I\u2019m working on my sermon for Sunday.\u2019 \u201c\u2018Oh, religion,\u2019 said the man. \u2018I don\u2019t like to get all caught up in the in\u2019s and out\u2019s and complexities of religion. I like to keep it simple. \u201cDo unto others as you would have them do unto you.\u201d The Golden Rule, that\u2019s my religion.\u2019 \u201c\u2018I see,\u2019 said Buttrick. \u2018And what do you do?\u2019 \u201c\u2018I\u2019m an astronomer.
