Winter Man-a-thon Part 2

My previous post mentioned some of the elements of our Winter Man-a-thon.
Here I will just leave you with a few highlights:
1. We were able to enjoy the maximum hours of Saturday (we were up at 4 am)
2. Once the fire got going we were able to fully appreciate it (temperatures floating around 0)
3. Breakfast was relished (since we ate from 4 am till 8 am to stay alive)
4. We invented a new meal – the “Bean Bag” (our hands were too cold to grip a plate)
5. We enjoyed a long hike in the woods (keep the blood moving in the legs)

2012 Winter Man-a-Thon

Ten of us men traveled up north to camp out a few weeks ago. Our destination was Pillager, MN. Growing up, my dad, brothers and I built a small cabin in the woods to use as our retreat center on a piece of land owned by a friend. Over the years we hiked, canoed, climbed, explored and camped out in every season, in every type of weather, and all with the same results – we had a great time.

We hiked back into our campsite and got to work on the important stuff. We cut wood, built a fire, and started cooking (the first two were just to get to the third). We cooked potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, and chuck roast in tinfoil packets directly on the coals. The only problem we faced was accidentally getting coals in the packets, which makes for interesting biting.
After we ate we took a midnight hike and watched the stars from a ridge and then discussed God’s interest in our lives. Praying together before we went to bed we had to stop to let the wolf howling to calm down.

We then laid out the tarp, struggled into our sleeping bags (some more than others since it was there first time in a mummy bag), and went to “sleep.” Again, I think the howling of the wolves frightened the guys with the rabbit fur hat – and rightfully so.

We would like to dedicate this post to our most faithful follower* of the blog.
After years of only casually acknowledging this site, our dear friend Harry, became a follower.
We are proud of you Harry.

*Note: There may be some debate on this point – we have yet to see actually proof that our blog is set to his homepage.

**Update: We have confirmation that the blog is set to his homepage.

Winter Weekend

One of our favorite activities of the year is the Winter Weekend at IRBC.

As the date approaches we can expect several things:
1. The Question: “How many days until the retreat?”
2. The Weather: Threatenings of storms and cold fronts.
3. The Joke: “I don’t need a toothbrush!”
4. The Reality: Someone forgot (or failed to use) their toothbrush.
5. The Competition: “Will the Waterboys make an appearance this year in floor hockey?”
6. The Game: “Who will win waterspoons?” (As if anyone actually “wins” that game.)
7. The Purpose: Lots of time to laugh, learn, eat, talk, and share what God is doing in our lives.

We were not disappointed this year in any one of those. We thank God for the opportunity to hear God’s Word and reflect upon it in a retreat setting. It was a great weekend.

Decorating Recipe Boxes

Some of the youth group girls came over to decorate recipe boxes as an outreach opportunity. They were also supposed to write out a few verses and give the boxes to a friend, a neighbor, or someone that needed encouragement in an attempt to build a relationship with them. Opportunities for sharing Christ with others can often come through intentional living (building relationships with people who you see consistently: someone in the grocery store, gas station, work, etc.). My neighbors really enjoyed their boxes (especially since they were filled with Apple Pie Chex Mix!

Who Killed Mr. Boddy?

The teens arrived at church on Sunday night to find that poor Mr. Boddy had been killed in the multipurpose room. Some acted surprised, others indifferent, and a few beastly fellows were quite content. The suspects were interrogated, the evidence reviewed, and the verdict proclaimed. It was Mrs. Peacock and Professor Plum.

Another key finding was made as well. No one in the youth group should seek a career as a private investigator…at least not one who has to work after 9 pm.
